A good real estate agent is someone who can develop a strong network of professional relationships and knows the real estate market well in the area where he or she works. To become an agent, you must complete four basic steps.
1. Learn Your State’s Requirements
Every state is a little different, so it’s important to do your research and know what you have to do to become an agent. Agents generally need to be 18 years of age or older and be a resident of the United States. An education in real estate is usually required, although the hours needed may vary from state to state, and you will have to pass your state’s licensing exam. Compile your checklist at the beginning of the process to avoid any ugly surprises later.
2. Take Pre-Licensing Courses
If you want to know how to get a real estate license, it starts with learning the ins and outs of the industry. For this, you need to take pre-licensing courses. You can get your education in person, but online classes may fit your schedule better so that you can get through them faster. Once you have completed the coursework and are confident in the knowledge you glean from your training, it’s time to prove it.
3. Pass Your State’s Licensing Exam
Before you take your state’s exam, you must apply for it. It’s a good idea to start the application process before you finish your coursework so that you aren’t sitting around waiting on the application to be approved before you are tested over the material you have learned. Some states require fingerprints and a background check as part of the application process, so don’t be surprised if it takes several weeks to get an answer. Once your application is approved, you can register for a test date and, if all goes well, pass it with flying colors.
4. Find a Broker
In most states, you cannot operate as a real estate agent on your own. You must find a broker. Brokers act as mentors for new agents. They may provide ongoing training opportunities, assist with marketing to build a client base and act as a support for the actions of the agents under them. A good broker can help you get your foot in the door so that you can become a successful agent.
In order to become a real estate agent, you have to complete all the necessary requirements. Once you have gone through these four steps, you can start your real estate career.
